This month Alsace was on the menu, and Sylvia treated us to four wines made from different grape varieties – Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer, all from Majestic Wines. Alsace, in the shadow of the Vosges mountains, has low rainfall and therefore concentrated flavours in its wines, and this selection did not disappoint. The group preference was for the off-dry charms of the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Spiegel 2014, 13.5% £15.99, though the very spicy Kuhlmann-Platz Gewürztraminer 2016, Cave de Hunawihr, 13% £9.99 came in a close second. Although Alsace Riesling scored highly in July against Rieslings from other areas, the Kuhlmann-Platz Riesling 2016, Cave de Hunawihr, 12% £9.99 came last!
