Our June meeting discussed the topic ‘Are our educational and training provisions adequate to ensure the UK’s place in this modern, competitive world?’
Members raised many important points: the fluctuating standards of attainment overall in both primary and secondary sectors; the need to improve teacher-quality; anxiety about the programmes of studies offered; the uneven sense of parental responsibility; the worrying lack in many students of motivation to learn; the fall in entry requirements of some of the post-war universities and lastly, the ‘academies’ with their high costs and unjustified freedoms.
It was clear that we ought to and could do better if we really took seriously the worldwide competition that we face. There were excellent contributions from all members…….. A great meeting! Tom Gilmore.
