National U3A High Street Project

2021 Progress Report

In September 2020 a team of volunteers from SLU3A and MHU3A began their participation in a national U3A project recording shops and empty premises across the UK with a view to assessing the impact of Covid on our high streets.

In September 2021 our local project team were out again recording changes that have taken place in Market Harborough since carrying out our original survey. While there have been a number of shop closures and openings over this time, with the pandemic continuing for longer than originally anticipated it remains too early to gauge its lasting impact on the retail sector. Our local initiative to date has nevertheless provided a fascinating insight into the changing face of Harborough town centre during a challenging time for retailers.  Our next step will be to contribute to a national report next year to coincide with the U3A’s 40th anniversary. We also hope to put the local information into a form that can be retained locally as a current day record of the town centre.
