Music Appreciation (Tuesday) – May

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close, MH, at 10am. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 16 April when Peter will present the programme. In April, Peter chose a programme of music by nine British composers who were all composing music into the 20th century. We listened to ‘An Occasional Overture’ by Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) followed by an ‘English Folk Song Suite’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams(1872-1958). Next we entered another world to the sounds of ‘The Eclogue for Piano and Strings’ by Gerald Finzi(1901-1956) and ‘A Winter Idyll’ by Gustav Holst(1874-1934). We finished the first part of the morning with the thrilling sounds of the tone poem ‘Tintagel’ by Arnold Bax(1883-1953). After coffee we heard the ‘Capriol Suite’ by Peter Warlock(1894-1930) and this was followed by the ‘Introduction and Allegro for String Orchestra’ by Edward Elgar(1857-1934). We finished with ‘On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring’ by Frederick Delius(1862-1934) and a selection of songs from ‘A Shropshire Lad’ by George Butterworth(1885-1916).
