We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 10am. In July, Peter presented the programme of music. Continuing our celebration of the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare which falls this year, we began the morning with the ‘Fantasy Overture – Romeo and Juliet’ by Tchaikovsky (1840-1893); this was followed by the ‘Piano Sonata No 11 in B flat major by Beethoven (1770-1827). At the moment the Group are listening (in numbered order) to all the Beethoven piano sonatas. After coffee we listened to the Violin Concerto No 1 by Bela Bartok (1881-1945). This concerto was completed in 1908 and Bartok gave the only manuscript to the violinist Stefi Geyer with whom he was in love. They later fell out of love and Stefi never played the concerto in public. The manuscript was only found after her death in 1956 and was first performed in 1958. Bartok had written another Violin Concerto in 1937/38 which is now named as the Violin Concerto No 2. The next meeting is on Tuesday, 16th August, when Peter will present the music. We have a vacancy for one new member… anyone who is interested please contact me. Peter Ellement.
