We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close, MH, at 10am. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 16 April when Peter will present the programme. In March, Peter chose the programme of music. The programme concentrated on the music of two composers Liszt(1811-1886) and Korngold((1897-1957). We listened to an orchestral arrangement of the ‘Hungarian Rhapsody No.2’ followed by four piano works – the ‘Memphisto Waltz No.1’, ‘Liebestraume’, ‘Rapsodie Espagnole’ and ‘Study No.3 Un Sospiro’ from Three Concert Studies. After coffee we listened to four works by Korngold, ‘Captain Blood’, which was the supporting music from the soundtrack of the film of the same name and was Errol Flynn’s first film for Warner Brothers(1935). The music was from a CD of music by Korngold for four Warner Brothers films conducted by Andre Previn who died on the 28 February 2019 at the age of 89. Our mark of respect for a multi-talented musician. We also listened to the ‘Violin Concerto’ played by Nicola Benedetti(for my friends – who else?) and two pieces from his opera Die Tote Stadt – ‘Marietta’s Lied’ and ‘Tanzlied des Pierrot’.
