Listening to a BBC C.D of the complete Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Ballet score taken from a live BBC Prom performance by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, I was reminded of the great contribution the Ballet had made to the Classical Music World. It seemed appropriate therefore to base the programme of the June “Phantom” Music Group Meeting on a representative selection of Ballet Music.
The programme would start with the Suites Tchaikovsky arranged from Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty , and we would stay in Russia to hear Stravinsky’s The Firebird. The French contribution , Les Deux Pigeons, by Andre Messanger was performed in Paris in 1886 sharing the bill with Donizetti’s opera La Favorita. Although we have already used up the allocated 2 hours for a Meeting I feel that we must come back to Daphnis and Chloe . It has been described as one of Ravel’s greatest scores and despite the many setbacks to completion over three years its originality, for example using an off stage chorus still takes my breath away.
