Music Appreciation 1 – May 2020

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close at 10am. Each meeting lasts for two hours.

Hopefully, we may be able to meet again on Tuesday 21 July.  How fortunate we are to have so much music at our fingertips on CDs and DVDs and on the BBC. The current lockdown and twelve weeks enforced isolation, due to Covid-19, has allowed me a lot of time to scan through music archives on the BBC i-player and to enjoy the sound and vision of the performance of great music. If you have a few moments please make time to listen to and view the following on BBC i-player – it will fill the time we will have missed in April, May and June. Holst and Vaughan Williams – Making Music English’. This programme tells the fascinating story of the friendship between Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Visually stunning, it features music by both composers. ‘The Planets with Professor Brian Cox’ – each movement is heard against the backdrop of the very latest planet imagery. ‘Perfect Pianists at the BBC’. This programme shows performances, from the BBC archives, by celebrated pianists including Benno Moseivitsch, Solomon, Dame Myra Hess, Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Alfred Brendel, Mitsuko Ochida and Stephen Hough. The final music that I recommend is a recording of a ‘2005 Promenade Concert by the National Youth Orchestra of Wales’. The concert included the ‘Concerto for Orchestra’ by Michael Berkeley(b.1948), ‘Four Songs’ by Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) and ‘The London Symphony’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams(1872-1958). At the moment this group is full. Please note my new e-mail address:
