Music Appreciation 1 – February 2020

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close at 10am. Each meeting lasts for two hours.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 18 February when the programme of music will be chosen by Jan. At our last meeting in January, the music was chosen and presented by Roger. We began with the ‘Concerto for two Mandolins in G major’ by Vivaldi(1678-1741). This was followed by the ‘Piano Concerto No.4 in G’   by Beethoven(1770-1827) and  then ‘Finlandia’ by  Jean Sibelius(1865-1957). After coffee we listened to  ‘Dances from Terpsichore’ by Michael Praetorius(1571-1621) and the Overture ‘Ill Matrimonio Segreto’ by Domenico Cimarosa(1749-1801). Next we heard ‘The Dance of Wild Irravel’ by Arnold Bax(1883-1953). We really must listen to more music by Arnold Bax! ‘Rodeo No.5 – Hoedown’ by Aaron Copland(1900-1990) had our feet a-tapping and we then thrilled to the music of the final movement of the ‘Symphony No.3 in C minor’ – the Organ Symphony by Camille Saint-Saens(1835-1921). We finished the morning as we began – with Vivaldi! In this case the recomposition by Max Richter(b.1996) of the movements ‘Autumn and Winter’ from Vivaldi’s  ‘Four Seasons’. Thanks Roger – a morning of memorable music. At the moment this group is full.
