Our next meeting will be on 5th November when we will watch the final episode in the ‘Art of France’ series. This focuses on the Impressionists and explains how their approach to painting influenced subsequent modern art movements. The term ‘Impressionist’ was first used as an insult in response to an exhibition of new paintings in Paris in 1874. A group of painters, rejected by the art establishment, defiantly set up their own exhibition. They included Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Degas. The impressionists painted landscapes and scenes from modern urban life in bright, pure colours using rapidly applied brush strokes. They often painted outdoors rather than in a studio. The DVD will be followed by a discussion and contributions from the group.
