Art History – November 2020

By the time you read this we will have held our first meeting on Zoom with the theme of Autumn Harvest.  I selected 6 paintings on the subject and we discussed the artists and their work and tried to pick a favourite.  If this trial session goes well, we will continue to have group meetings on Zoom for the time-being and I will be asking members to select an artwork each for us to consider and discuss.

I have also been keeping in touch with the group by email and phone, in order to share any ideas for TV programmes or websites that I come across.  We are fortunate to have a steady flow of material to choose from, both new and repeats.

With winter fast approaching, here are some suggestions for programmes you may have missed but are available to watch on iplayer (some for a limited time only).

BBC 2 – Royal Academy Summer Exhibition – postponed for the first time to Winter.  A documentary filmed before and during lockdown. Information also on RA website.

BBC 4 – The Billion Dollar Art Hunt – art stolen from a Boston museum in 1990 and hidden behind a wall in a house in Dublin.  Includes work by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Degas.

BBC 2 – Inside Culture with Mary Beard, 5 episodes available.

BBC4 – Big Sky, Big Dreams, Big Art: Made in the USA, 3 part series on American Art, with Waldemar Januszczak.
