Art History – May

On 3rd June we will watch a drama – documentary about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Van Gogh.  The film uses dialogue sourced from the artist’s letters to his brother, friends and to other artists.  Van Gogh is well known for his Post- Impressionist art work and there is currently an exhibition of some of his most famous paintings at Tate Britain. Van Gogh lived in England as a young man for several years and was inspired by the art he saw here, including paintings by Constable and Millais and in turn he inspired British artists including Francis Bacon and David Bomberg.  The DVD will be followed by a discussion and contributions from the group.
