Architecture – September

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church.    Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 25 September when Michael will introduce a number of films on a variety of architectural topics – The Guggenheim Museum; Why great architecture should tell a story(Ole Scheeren); How bad architecture wrecked cities(James Kunstler); Why we should build wooden skyscrapers(Michael Green); How to make an attractive city(James Kunstler); A playful solution to the housing crisis.

We had a most enjoyable afternoon in August when Colin talked about ten buildings that had won the RIBA Stirling Prize over the last 20 years and then members had the opportunity to choose their own favourites. The ten buildings were – the Lord’s Media Centre(1999); Peckham Library(2000); Gateshead Millenium Bridge(2002); 30 St Mary Axe – the Gherkin(2004); Scottish Parliament Building(2005); Maggie’s Centre, Hammersmith(2009); Evelyn Grace Academy, Brixton(2011); Astley Castle, Nuneaton(2013); Newport Street Gallery, Vauxhall(2016); Hastings Pier, East Sussex(2017). Our favourite was the Gateshead Millenium Bridge followed equal second by the Gherkin and Astley Castle and third Masggie’s Centre.
