Architecture – October

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church.     Our next meeting is on Tuesday 22 October when we will have  afternoon given over to the life and work of three architects:  Colin will talk about Walter Gropius(founder of the German Bauhaus School, Geoff about Terunobu Fujimori and Michael about Erno Goldfinger.  During the afternoon we will find time to talk about the programme for 2020 (suggestions and offers please) and the SLU3A  1960s Project to be held in October 2020. Our thanks to our three speakers in October: Tony who talked to us about      St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia(the second oldest Anglican place of worship in Canada -1754) which was destroyed by fire in 2001and rebuilt and refurnished by the labours of the local communities; Trish took us on a tour of the Town Hall in her home town of Stockport designed by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas and opened in 1908. Some wonderful interiors and well worth a visit. Colin talked to us about the new Opera House at Neville Holt. – short listed among six for the Royal Institute of British Architects(RIBA) Stirling Prize for 2019.  Programmes about the building have been shown on local and national television – by the time you read this the winner will have been announced(8 October).
