Architecture – November

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church.     Our next meeting is on Tuesday 26 November when we will have an afternoon given over to our second Quiz organised by Colin and Geoff. This is the last meeting of 2019 and all members of the Architecture Group are encouraged to come and enjoy an afternoon of ‘gentle’ competition on all things architectural. Last year the quiz was a great success and hugely enjoyed, even by the members of the team who won the wooden spoon! Do come and join us again – it’s bound to be fun with Colin and Geoff hosting the afternoon. In October Colin, Geoff and Michael introduced us respectively to the life and work of  three architects: Walter Gropius(1883-1969) – founder of the Bauhaus School and a pioneer of modernist architecture, Terunobu Fujimori(b1946) – a Japanese architect and architectural  historian who built ‘Tea Houses’ all over the place and Erno Goldfinger(1902-1987) –  an Hungarian architect who came to England in 1930, a member of the modernist movement and proponent of what later became known as ‘brutalist’architecture – concrete and all that!  A great afternoon – we learnt a lot and delivered with humour.

During the afternoon, Peter told the group that he wished to stand down in 2020 as the Group Leader(after nearly 15 years). Please contact Peter if you are interested in taking on the leadership of the Architecture Group.

Some time was given to discussing the programme for 2020. Please let Peter know if you would be prepared to give a talk to the group in 2020. At the moment we have talks and topics for seven of the eleven months in 2020. We also discussed the SLU3A project for October 2020.

New members are always very welcome.  Please contact me if you are interested in joining the Group.
