Music Appreciation (Friday) – August meeting

At our August meeting we enjoyed a selection of Suites by Khachaturian, collected from his music for the Ballet and other theatrical performances.  After refreshments, we listened to a spirited performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim.  The amateur conductors in the group managed to contain themselves during […]

Play Reading (Modern) – September meeting

Having banished, more or less, the rival ghosts of ‘Blithe Spirit’ in our August meeting, we will be getting entangled this time in the hilarious misunderstandings that arise when the Markhams’ top-floor flat appears to be available for the evening.  ‘Move over Mrs Markham’ starts on Tuesday, September 20th at 2pm.  David Ginns.

We were sad to learn of the sudden death of Dick Myrton, who started the Conversation group many years ago.  A few of us are original members who cherish the memory of his awful shaggy dog stories, told in slightly dubious German, which had to be reworded, then translated before the inevitable laughter.  My favourite […]

Papercraft and More

We are a small group eagerly learning more and more.  August saw us using freebie craft materials making cards and we also started making a beaded bracelet, which challenged even the best of us!  However, the results are wonderful.  In September we will be thinking about what to make for Christmas…….  We would love to […]

Singing for Fun

After our summer break we resumed at 2pm on Friday, 9th September in the Coffee Lounge at the Methodist Church.  We are not a choir, we simply sing together for the joy of doing so in a convivial atmosphere.  New members (and any form of musical accompaniment) will be most welcome.

Walking (Half Day – Wednesday) – September meeting

The September walk is on Wednesday, 14th September and will start from the Village Hall in Bruntingthorpe at our normal start time of 10am.  The walk is approximately six miles.  The village hall is situated on Main Street in the village.  Please park considerately within that area.  Currently this group is at capacity – do […]

Music Appreciation (Tuesday) – August meeting

Peter presented the programme of music at our August meeting.  We began the morning with the overture: ‘The Italian Girl in Algiers’ by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868).  This was followed by the ‘Piano Sonata No 12 in A flat major’ by Beethoven (1770-1827) and the ‘Violin Concerto No 1 in G minor’ by Max Bruch (1838-1920).  After […]

Architecture – August meeting

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church, Market Harborough.  At the August meeting, Colin and Peter gave a talk entitled ‘Oranges and Lemons………’ which was a look at some churches within the City of London.  Colin began the afternoon by talking about the meaning […]

Ukulele – August meeting

Just had a wonderful Beatles session, strumming through some fantastic 60s melodies from the Fab Four.  Although some of our number are fairly new to the Ukulele, we now feel we can offer ourselves as an entertainment act, ideally to an uncritical audience who might like to enjoy our singing and playing!  So if you […]
