We had a very interesting and absorbing talk on the situation, opportunities for development and problems in the businesses of English farmers today. The NFU speaker, Mr Oliver Lee, was quite brilliant; he covered the advances in farming techniques, the range of opportunities available to all farmers to work hard with EU support and despite severe competition from abroad, difficulties of climate and the demands of supermarkets imposing tight financial and onerous terms of business on farmers who still manage to get by and make a living.
A wonderful, clear and encouraging talk which showed the devotion and skills of so many farmers in their chosen role. All our members took a full part in the discussion and greatly appreciated this eye-opener onto the agricultural world: a special session indeed.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 14 on the important topic: ‘Should the UK adopt the political system of proportional representation at elections?’
