John Pearse gave us a thoughtful presentation of the topic: ‘The decline in integrity in business life’. It was very well received. We then discussed the changes for the worst in many areas and practices in business (food industry quality, cost – competition, cutting corners, cigarette sales abroad, suspected dilution of drugs, doubling of prices, banking – scandals, excessive bonuses, fuel prices, theatre and rail tickets being just some examples). It has become harder to trust businesses or expect truthfulness. Our strongest weapon is to trust only agents whose services and goods are well known to us for their fair and reasonable dealings. Other high-item cost sources are vets, medicaments and others, such as delaying payments from businesses to suppliers and beating down suppliers to squeeze more profit. An excellent discussion.
