The Group looked at various systems other than “first past the post” to see what PR with its varying structures, could offer to improve every voter’s gain in part, at least: a more effective democratic vote. All PR variants seek to ensure fairer distribution of votes among the contending parties: a refinement reflecting the regional and national elements more effectively. No scheme is perfect, but one stood out: “the alternative vote plus” where a voter has two votes, one for his/her favourite candidate and another for a candidate from a party list or a regional candidate. MPs are elected to serve in multiple grouped constituencies. After a very careful discussion most of us preferred to go for PR in this last scheme.
Our May meeting is on Thursday, May 12 on the topic “The generation-gap is getting wider (in education, moral values, prosperity and views on marriage, etc)”.
