At our March meeting, the Local History Group enjoyed a talk from Mary Matts regarding life and art on the canal boats around Market Harborough. She was full of knowledge, showing artefacts and clothing (some original) used by the boat people in the 18th and 19th century. She finished by showing us how the naive decorations on their utensils and boats were achieved by painting a small black coal hod. Within a very short time she had covered it in red and yellow roses, together with daisies. It certainly filled most of us with awe and envy at the ease with which she did it!
Since January we have also enjoyed films from the Harborough Movie Makers and talks from John Tillotson of Harborough’s Civic Society. All events were very well attended and enjoyed and on April 19th our talk at the Congregational Church is by Bob Hakewill on the Boat Builders of Market Harborough. This will start at 2pm. When we hold events at the Church we ask £1.50 from each member attending to help with the cost of hiring the hall.
