Local History – September meeting

On Tuesday, 20th September, twenty three members of the Local History Group had the pleasure of a private tour around Boughton House near Geddington.  We were split into two groups, each with a very friendly and knowledgeable guide, and taken around the ground floor of this magnificent house.  It was a wonderful afternoon where we were all able to enjoy the beautiful paintings, tapestries and statues whilst we learned of the history of the family, the Dukes of Buccleuch and Montagu.  The first Duke of Montagu inherited a small Tudor Manor in the 17th Century and proceeded to transform it into ‘The English Versailles’.  We were then treated to very welcome refreshments in the Stable Court tearoom and afterwards we were able to wander around the beautiful grounds.  All the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and we were happily able to enjoy our visit in the sunshine.  We are now all much looking forward to our visit to Northampton next month to see the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House.  For further details of the Local History Group, do please contact me.  Jan Tilley.
