We were sad to learn of the sudden death of Dick Myrton, who started the Conversation group many years ago. A few of us are original members who cherish the memory of his awful shaggy dog stories, told in slightly dubious German, which had to be reworded, then translated before the inevitable laughter. My favourite memory is his tale of being in Germany with Army friends on R and R. After a few beers they had forgotten the name of their hotel but were able to ask passers-by where the road was. Surprised when people laughed but gave no directions, they finally recognised the hotel – and the street sign. Einbahnstrasse. One way street! Without Dick we might not have two successful German groups now. And we have a German joke book! Sylvia Mountford.
