Enthusiasm together with the buzz of meeting up with those of similar commitment to the U3A movement were very evident when fifty plus Group Leaders and Committee Members met up recently for an SLU3A Workshop. It was a super opportunity to thank Group Leaders and their members for enabling 75 groups to meet regularly. We are all conscious that we do so on a voluntary basis.
Earlier in June, Sharon Webb, Group Enabler, and I had the opportunity to attend a similar event held by Northampton U3A. They also have over 1,000 members and face similar challenges of recruiting volunteers and communication although, amazingly, they have 120 groups! We made useful contacts with their Committee members and were able to exchange ideas on the tasks we both face.
I am delighted to announce that my recent electronic mailouts to all SLU3A members for whom we have an email address*, have successfully resulted in 3 new volunteers joining the Committee at our August meeting. I should like to welcome on board Sarah Cawdell, Gift Aid Manager, Kenny Darling, Lettings Officer and Liz Brett, helping out on specific events as necessary. Thank you, too, to several members who have said they are willing to be called upon to help with one off tasks.
Finally, I hope you are making the most of this delightful English summer, so welcome after the long, hard winter. However, I was reminded of those days when flyers were passed around at our Group Leaders’ Workshop announcing the details of our Christmas lunch!
